Ranch – rancho, hacienda
to round up cattle
Cattle rustling (in Australia duffing)
Stampede – estampida
Wagon – carro
Rifle / pistol
Gun belt, holster – funda de la pistola
Lasso – lazo
Spurs – espuelas
Chaps – zahones, chaparreras (Mexico)
6 gallon hat
Wrangler – the person on a ranch or cattle drive who took care of the horses.
“Injun” – slang way for cowboys to say/pronounce Indian. Ie. Native American Indians
Cowgirl – female cowboy
Cowboy Idioms and sayings
All hat and no cattle – someone who is all talk but cannot back it up
shoot from the hip – to do something without much thought or preparation
As rare as rocking horse droppings
Bite the dust
One-horse town – a place with few comforts, dull rural town
drugstore cowboy – a fashionably dressed man who hangs around public places trying to pick up women.
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back into your pocket
Never drive black cattle in the dark.
It’s better to keep your mouth shut and look stupid than open it and prove it.
Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.
A cowboy (builder, workman, trader etc.) – a highly unprofessional tradesman
Too many chiefs and not enough Indians – too many people giving orders but not many people willing to do the work
