Types of long-distance trucks/lorries
Flat bed
Tanker/Tank truck/Fuel truck
Platform truck/lorry
Dump/dumper/tipper truck
Refrigerator/Refrigerated lorry
Tractor unit (not an a farming tractor) – has a heavy-duty towing engine
Articulated lorry – has two or more parts joined together with a gap between parts
Trailer truck – standard type of articulated lorry
Box truck – not articulated

A UK HGV licence has different classes
Cabin
to haul freight
Owner-operators

EU driving regulations (2007)
The non-stop driving time may not exceed 4.5 hours.
After 4.5 hours of driving the driver must take a break period of at least 45 minutes. However, this can be split into 2 breaks, the first being at least 15 minutes, and the second being at least 30 minutes
The daily driving time shall not exceed 9 hours.
The weekly driving time may not exceed 56 hours.
Truckers can get paid by the mile, by the load or by the hour.

How much do long-distance lorry drivers earn? In the UK, a lorry driver earns an average of £2,060 a month before tax (2,385 euros), while the average in the Netherlands is about £1,500 (1740 euros) and in Germany about £1,650 (1,900 euros).
It’s a demanding job. The average working week is 48 hours of driving, which can be extended to up to 60 hours.

Pros & Cons of being a long-distance trucker
Long hours
Discomfort eg. sleeping in truck cabin, bad motels
Many hours/days away from family/home
Hard to meet with friends and relatives
Can cause backache and other health problems
Can be monotonous at times
Can be lonely
Fairly good entry-level pay
Potential for plenty of overtime pay
Little training required to start
A lot of independence
Freedom of the open road
No dress code
Plenty of time to listen to podcasts!
